How small stores find their first thousand customers without ad spend

Three channels that compound for small budgets, and the one metric that tells you which to double down on.

Paid acquisition is a fine accelerator and a terrible foundation. If a store cannot get its first few hundred orders without ads, ads will only make the losses arrive faster.

Email remains the highest-return channel for small retail. A welcome sequence, a restock alert, and a post-purchase check-in will out-earn most campaigns you could buy.

Search is slower but permanent. A handful of pages answering the exact questions your buyers type will bring orders years after they're written.

Partnerships are the underrated third. One shop or newsletter with the same audience and no competing product can outperform a month of spend.

Track contribution margin per order, not revenue. It's the only number that tells you which channel is actually paying for itself.
